Please Note: We are not experts on the topic of Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). We have conducted online research and have posted information based on that research in this post.
There are a number of resources available online to learn more about Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). If you are interested in learning more about this topic, we recommend looking online.
As an example, Stripe has posted a useful guide on their site.
Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a new rule set to come into effect on September 14, 2019. This is related to a European regulation – PSD2.
It appears this will mostly affect purchases that are made between someone located in Europe with another person in Europe. Both the vendor and the customer would be based in the European Economic Area.
If someone in the European Economic Area purchases from someone in another area (Example: the U.S.), authentication does not appear to be required since the business and the customer are not both based in the European Economic Area.
For those users who experience the SCA process, there is an extra step to successfully purchase. An additional request for the user to approve the charge will be needed. Transactions for those who require SCA that don’t meet the criteria for the new authentication might be declined.
Each online payment processor can decide if they want to make adjustments on their end if needed. So any WishList Member integrations that direct the user to the payment processor site shouldn’t need an update. The WishList Member purchase/registration process would remain the same and the online payment processor would add the SCA process for European Users on that payment processor site.
Most of the WishList Member payment provider integrations direct the user to the payment processor site so an update to WishList Member is not required in those cases.
A WishList Member payment provider integration option that processes payments on the actual WordPress site running WishList Member (Stripe is an example as it pops up a payment box on the site) requires an update to WishList Member in order to add the SCA process.
As an example, WishList Member 3.0.6297 and higher include the update for the Stripe integration to function with SCA. Updates to WishList Member settings or Stripe settings are not required as long as the site is running WishList Member 3.0.6297 or higher.
It sounds like SCA will be implemented gradually over time by European banks starting Sep 14, 2019.
